Information Report - Poison Dart Frogs

Poison Dart Frogs

By Anija Irvine

I am learning to inform my audience through an information report.

Vibrant but toxic, Poison dart frogs are one of the most poisonous land animals on earth, with enough venom to kill ten grown men. They come in various colours and have different patterns on their skin, such as the black and green species which has black spots and the strawberry frog which is red with blue legs. There are more than 100 species of poison dart frogs. They are carnivores and can live up to ten years in captivity.

Poison dart frogs are commonly found in South American rainforests (The Amazon) but can sometimes be found in Central America and on Hawaiian islands. Their skin is covered in mucus, a slimy substance which you can not mix with water. This means they live on dry land. They live in small compact colonies which makes it easier to protect each other. They live around other animals which they kill to eat.

The poison dart frog eats small animals. They shoot out their long, sticky tongues to catch flies, ants, insects, spiders, and termites along with all the other little animals that live in the muggy rainforests. They catch their prey by flicking their tongues out and grabbing the creepy crawlies. Their tongue is covered in a sticky substance which make the enemy stick to it. Then they bring their tongue in so they can have their meal. They get their Poison from their prey, including ants, termites and beetles.

Their colouring can be yellow, gold, copper, red, green, blue, or black. The poison dart frog is an endangered animal. You need to be careful because all you have to do is touch them and you're dead. You might hear people talking about Poison arrow frogs, well Poison dart frogs are the same it is just another one of those many names that a Poison dart frog has. They have lots of other names too, such as Poison frog or a Dart-Poison frog. You need to look out for these deadly creatures as they are only the size of a paper clip. Did you know that the brighter their skin is the louder they croak. Their croak is very loud so you can hear it from a pretty long way away.

There are many types of these beautiful frogs but you must be careful as these creatures will kill you within a second if you touch them. They are easy to identify as they have very brightly coloured skin. They can also have a loud croak which can make them easy to find. The Dart-Poison frog is on the prowl in South American rainforests and can sometimes be found in Hawaii and North America. They eat tiny insects such as spiders, beetles, termites and ants, they also eat flies. These amazing creatures would be awesome as your pet to but would you trust them?
