Our Amazing Solar System

Have you ever wondered what is beyond our planet? Planet Earth is only one planet out of eight planets to orbit the sun in our very large Solar System.There are many things that orbit the Sun along with our planet, these include comets, asteroids, and moons.

The solar system is made up of the Sun and everything that orbits around it. The Sun is only a medium star and it is also a gas giant but it has no moons. The sun is the largest object in our Solar System containing 99.8 percent of the Solar System mass.

The planets names are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Inner planets are made up of iron and rock, and the outer planets are giant worlds with thick layers of gas.

Pluto however is no longer considered a planet.This is because some planet’s moons are bigger than Pluto - even Earth is bigger! Hardly anything is known about Pluto but it is made up of a thin layer of nitrogen. Pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope show the layer of nitrogen that is Pluto. Pluto takes 248 years to orbit the sun, and it doesn’t go in a perfect circle. Pluto is also 7.5million kilometres away from the sun.

So now you know a bit about our solar system, the sun, planets, and Pluto. Next time at night look up at the stars try to see some planets, and prepare to be amazed.  

Hockey Room 6

Hockey for Connolly

This term Rooms 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 students of Good Shepherd School have been learning to play hockey each Wednesday taught by Mr Bryan.

The students and Mr Bryan have been concentrating on turning their hockey sticks, using their left hand and also sidestepping with the ball as well as turning around cones with the ball.  Over the next few weeks they will play a game of hockey reffed by Mr Bryan.

A reminder to the children to bring their sports gear each Wednesday while our Hockey lessons are on. If you for some reason do not want your child/children to play please inform your teacher or write a note.

Creative Writing - The Stone

The Stone.

I am learning to entertain my audience. 

This story is the sequel to The Adventure of the Stone. 

… I saw a stone.  I reached down grabbing the stone in my hand.  My fingers rubbing over the top of the stone as I could feel a strange heat coming from the smooth pebble.  As my eyes looked straight down at this odd rock, as my thumb turned in over in my hand.  

I gasped in terror as I dropped the rock from my grip, letting it fall to the ground.  Had I really seen the writing on the rock? I went down again as the rock lays in front of me. The rock facing down showing me the message once more! I picked up the stone, it said help me I checked the back of the rock It was the same stone I had thrown! I threw it back into the water  but somehow it returned and came back I picked it up again. This time it said it’s me! I was trying to work out who it was, when I saw the shape. It was a person in the distance, on a boat.

I ran back to the house and got a boat from the dark basement. I ran as fast as a cheater and i made it back in time, I rowed so fast on my boat I found the person with ease.

But, this was no person to save! It was a creature with a mask. This mysterious animal had a chain around its neck. We were so petrified we went back to the house and never came back again.
