Information Report - Killer Creatures

Killer Creatures
By Lucy deYoung
I.A.l.T  inform my audience through an information report.

What is black and white, top of the food chain and has 40 to 56 pearly white teeth., lives All over the world and is the 2nd smartest marine animal in the world? Yes you're dead right- an Orca whale or as you might say a Killer whale but is this name fair? Orcas have never actually hurt someone in the wild can you believe that?

Appearance:
The Orca whale is black on top with black underneath and has a little patch of white behind the eye. Their eyes are positioned on the side of their head. The animal has a dorsal fin,. Due to stress the dorsal fin will bend over. Their skin is as leather, smooth but thick . Orcas can grow up to 6   to 9 metres long!! and weigh over 6 ton!! An Orca named Tilikum is one of the biggest orcas in captivity as 6.9 meters long. Also the Orca has 40 to 56 teeth in total. But the numbers of the species is dying due of captivity and poaching.

Habitat/sleeping:
Orcas do not have a precise place to settle and sleep for the night and they are found all over the world. But you might be thinking how do orca sleep without drowning? Aren’t they mammals? Well orcas actually sleep on their backs and float, and put their heads to the surface. This prevents drowning. But orcas as well as dolphins and other animals are still awake when sleeping, they have half of their brain awake and half asleep so the can be alert for predators. http://dougsart.net/shop/cartpix/image8/Orca%20Whale.jpg

Intelligence:
Orcas are the second smartest marine animal. This would occur because orcas have a section of the brain for emotions that humans do not have. scientists have found they are amazingly well-wired for sensing and analyzing their watery, three-dimensional environment.
Orca are so intelligent that they have never killed a person in the wild. Though due to the amount of water parks with orcas in captivity there have been numerous deaths. http://www.takepart.com/sites/default/files/styles/tp_gallery_slide/public/KillerWhaleSunset_117148882_0_1.jpg

protection/Hunting/Food:
Orcas do not have many enemies as they are top of the marine food chain. killer whales have been observed preying on more than 140 species of animals, including many species of bony fish, sharks and rays, and 50 different species of marine mammals. Their only threat would be big sharks or great whites. to protect themselves Orcas charge themselves into animals and tears chunks from their bodies… orcas can devour a sea animal… and maybe even you! You do not want to mess with this kind of power.

Conclusion
Orcas live all over the world,. and their intelligence are too the fullest. Orcas are needing more attention as they are being hunted and put into captivity. they are endangered, animals. http://wallpapers.free-review.net/wallpapers/15/Orcas_killer_whales.jpg

Information Report - Gorillas

Gorillas

By Ata-Marie Kerrison

I am learning to inform with an information report.

What is known as a herbivore but is a omnivore? Yes, a gorilla. This omnivore is known to live for 35 years and 50 years in captivity. The gorilla uses body gestures and sounds to communicate to others. They are found mostly in West Central Africa.

Living
A troop of gorillas live in an area called a territory, this is where they find all there food. It can be as large as 50 square kilometres. Some troops have a routine to sort out their day. Gorillas sleep for around 13 hours, this includes noon. About 6pm, they form a sleeping nest by bending branches to make a cushion. The nest may be on the ground or in low branches. The young gorillas sleep with their mother until they are 3 years old, some family groups move to a new feeding space everyday.

Feeding
Gorillas feed on berries, leaves, plants, fruits etc this is the feast of the gorilla. One male can eat up to 18kg of food, 67% of their diet is known to be fruit, 17% is leaves seed stems, and 3% termites and caterpillars. The gorillas favourite food are thistles, bamboo and wild celery. Did you know the gorilla does not drink yes, it doesn't they get all the liquid from the food they munch. A full grown male gorilla are known to eat around 23kg that's more than 7, 3kg bags of potatoes!.

In conclusion a gorilla sleeps on the ground or in low branches and gorillas don’t drink water. The gorillas favourite food is wild celery, thistles and bamboo. This is a hairy version of a human.

Information Report - Poison Dart Frogs

Poison Dart Frogs

By Anija Irvine

I am learning to inform my audience through an information report.

Vibrant but toxic, Poison dart frogs are one of the most poisonous land animals on earth, with enough venom to kill ten grown men. They come in various colours and have different patterns on their skin, such as the black and green species which has black spots and the strawberry frog which is red with blue legs. There are more than 100 species of poison dart frogs. They are carnivores and can live up to ten years in captivity.

Poison dart frogs are commonly found in South American rainforests (The Amazon) but can sometimes be found in Central America and on Hawaiian islands. Their skin is covered in mucus, a slimy substance which you can not mix with water. This means they live on dry land. They live in small compact colonies which makes it easier to protect each other. They live around other animals which they kill to eat.

The poison dart frog eats small animals. They shoot out their long, sticky tongues to catch flies, ants, insects, spiders, and termites along with all the other little animals that live in the muggy rainforests. They catch their prey by flicking their tongues out and grabbing the creepy crawlies. Their tongue is covered in a sticky substance which make the enemy stick to it. Then they bring their tongue in so they can have their meal. They get their Poison from their prey, including ants, termites and beetles.

Their colouring can be yellow, gold, copper, red, green, blue, or black. The poison dart frog is an endangered animal. You need to be careful because all you have to do is touch them and you're dead. You might hear people talking about Poison arrow frogs, well Poison dart frogs are the same it is just another one of those many names that a Poison dart frog has. They have lots of other names too, such as Poison frog or a Dart-Poison frog. You need to look out for these deadly creatures as they are only the size of a paper clip. Did you know that the brighter their skin is the louder they croak. Their croak is very loud so you can hear it from a pretty long way away.

There are many types of these beautiful frogs but you must be careful as these creatures will kill you within a second if you touch them. They are easy to identify as they have very brightly coloured skin. They can also have a loud croak which can make them easy to find. The Dart-Poison frog is on the prowl in South American rainforests and can sometimes be found in Hawaii and North America. They eat tiny insects such as spiders, beetles, termites and ants, they also eat flies. These amazing creatures would be awesome as your pet to but would you trust them?

Information Report - Chinchillas

Chinchillas
By Caitlin Gregan
I am learning to inform with an information report.

Far away in the silent sleeping Andes mountains of South America there lives a small but furry creature called a Chinchilla. Their name might sound dangerous but actually they are one of the most harmless creatures in the world. While most things are sleeping these small creatures are coming out of their burrows to find food for themselves and their baby kits. Did you know that Chinchillas can live up to 10-18 years of age?.  Chinchillas are named after American Indian tribe called "Chincha" which used chinchilla's fur in the past to produce clothes. Chinchillas were hunted nearly to extinction in the previous century because of its dense and soft fur. They are still listed as critically endangered species today.
VioletChin.jpg

What they look like?
Chinchillas look a lot like a mouse crossed with a rabbit but a lot more fluffy and are a lot more smaller. Chinchillas come in many different colors, such as grey, white, brown and black.  Full grown chinchillas are usually 25-35 cm long, did you know that Chinchillas can overheat?, In their native home in South America the weather is cool and dry. The best temperature of 15 degrees to 25 degrees centigrade (temperature) chinchillas have a soft furry coat that they can keep clean by having a dirt bath. In their natural habitat there is not that much water so they clean themselves by having a dirt bath.

Chinchillas habitat
Chinchillas originate from high altitudes of the Andes mountains (in South America) that run along the western coast of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. A Chinchillas habitat in the Andes mountains is almost 3 miles above sea level that’s 5 kilometers high! Like rabbits Chinchillas live in little holes called burrows, they usually live there during the day but at night they crawl out and find food for their family. The food they often eat is grass, carrots, leafy greens, dried fruit and grains.
What they eat
Chinchillas are naturally vegetarians, they usually eat fruit, stems, flowers, grasses, leaves, twigs and  vegetables and small insects such as bugs. Chinchillas teeth grow continuously throughout their life which need wearing down and need to keeping at the correct length. Not eating the right diet can result in serious dental disease. Chinchilla’s digestive system is very sensitive. A good quality diet is considered to be rich in fibre low in protein and very low on fats.

How they protect themselves
Chinchillas have many predators such as lions, eagles and foxes. If a predator does manage to catch a chinchilla, it will still be able to escape by means of a fur slip. A fur slip is  when a large patch of fur is released at the point of contact, leaving the predator with a mouthful of fur but no chinchilla, This is harmless to the chinchilla, and the fur does grow back.

In conclusion chinchillas are friendly, cuddly animals that look a lot like rabbits. They live in the high Andes mountains on the  western coast of South America, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. They eat grass, hay, twigs, leaves and fruit. They protect themselves by shedding some of their fur then running away. They are very small like a mouse only a little bit smaller. Next time you're camping out in the Andes mountains at night go outside and turn on your torch and look for the small furry creatures there might be a chance you see one.

Information Report - KOMODO DRAGON

 KOMODO DRAGON
By Lukas Van Aken

I am learning to write an information report

SSSSSSS, Imagine dragon teeth digging into your skin!  Well it might happen if you wander onto a special island in Indonesia. There you will find  the Komodo Dragon, it is one of the biggest reptiles in the world. They were first  found in Australia and are now found in parts of Indonesia . The  scientific name for the Komodo dragon  is Varanus Komodoensis . They are endangered and there are about only three thousand to five thousand left because they are poached for their skin and other parts of their body. People call them Ora or Land Crocodile.

The Komodo dragon is scaly, brown and black. They have no teeth but they have fangs that hold deadly  venom to kill there prey. They are about 2.4 to 2.7 metres long, and  fully grown males can weigh up to 166 kilograms! They also have a long muscular tail to keep them balanced and  a big flat head. They have sharp claws to to run fast and to claw out the food from the prey.

Komodo dragons are carnivores,  that means they eat meat. They use their claws to rip open and eat other animals  like deer, carrion, pigs, buffalo, horses, snakes, sheep, cattle, birds and their eggs, wild boar and monkeys. They hunt in packs so that means that they can corner an animal and then they all eat it. They can also swim in the sea so that they can eat fish as well. Komodo Dragons can  hide very well with the tall grass where they live, so they can catch animals easily.

Komodo Dragons are now found in some parts of Indonesia like Rinca, Flores, Gili, Motang and Padar. They
are found in tall grassy places, and also hot  places and deserts with lots of trees. They have barely any   water because it is so hot . They have to live close to the sea and need to live around 35 degrees celsius. They are now protected in North America zoos because they are endangered.

So next time you are on a freaky island maybe back out because you might be wandering into a Komodo dragon's territory. If you do carry on wandering,  be careful of your safety, and and also try not to harm them. After all Komodo Dragons are precious, and we wouldn’t want to lose them.

Information Report - Platypus

Platypus
by Chloe Simpson
I.A.L.T infom with an information report.

Whats a very unique animal that is a mix of a beaver’s tail, a duck's beak (bill) and webbed feet, an
otter's body, and fur? Thats right - the Australian Platypus. The Platypus is one of the only two mammals that lay eggs. When the eggs hatch the (puggle) baby platypus is the size a lima bean. Platypus are carnivores which means they eat other animals such as fish and crabs. Which leads to their diet...

The Platypus’ Diet

The Platypus is a carnivore, so they eat meat and fish and their diet mostly consists of fish including shrimp, crayfish, insects larvae and worms. Did you know that the platypus has a small mouth at the bottom of their bill? So they dig out their food with their beak or swim after their prey  with their powerful webbed feet. Did you know that they spend about 12 hours searching for food, a Day ! They also eat 20% of their body weight a day. Platypus have a huge tail in which they store energy. Which leads to their appearance...

The Appearance of the Platypus

Did you know that when scientists first discovered the Platypus they did not think that it was real, they just thought it was all a big joke. When they found it they thought it was either a beaver, a duck, or an otter. All because of it’s unique otter's body and furry fur, a duck’s bill and webbed feet and a beavers tail. The platypus only weighs 2 kg when fully grown and is the size of a lima bean when just born. Which leads to their breeding...

How the platypus breed?

Did you know that some mammals lay eggs ? There are only two mammals that do, the Echidna and the Platypus. The platypus can lay 1-3 eggs and when they hatch the baby is called a puggle. When the female platypus lays her eggs in a chamber at the end of her burrow, she wraps her warm body around her eggs and waits for them to hatch. In her water proof burrow, which can reach up to 30 meters in length and is dug in a riverbank. Which leads to their habitat...

Where do platypus live? ( Habitat )

When you're walking along in east australia or tasmania near a small stream or a large river, and you see a splashing  in the water, it will probably be a platypus swimming in the refreshing water. Platypus live in Tasmania and south Australia, in the cold water, in a large river or a small stream. Their thick, waterproof fur means they do not get cold in the water which they live in.

Now you know lots of facts about platypus. Baby platypus are called puggles, they live in east Australia and Tasmania. Their babies hatch in a chamber at the end of the female platypuses burrow. Platypus eat meat and fish which means they carnivores. Overall platypus are very unique and special.

Information Report - The Red Fox

The Red Fox

by Jessica Lord

I am learning to inform my audience through an information report

When is a dog not a dog ?  When it’s a fox of course. The fox is part of the dog family and there are 12 different types of foxes in the whole world. But I’m only talking about one type, The Red Fox. The life span of a red fox in the wild is seven years but they can last up to fifteen years in captivity. Red foxes are a native animal to north America. This leads to their habitat

Habitat
So where do foxes live you ask? In Europe, America, Asia and Africa you might see the red fox. The majority of the red fox live in forests, mountains, deserts and grasslands. Although some red foxes can live in human environments. Foxes travel in mated pairs. But they don’t always move around together - they hunt alone. In the red foxes habitat it can be from 10 to 37 degrees celsius.

Food
The red fox is an omnivore. This means that they eat meat and plants. Did you know that the red fox hunts by diving headfirst into 3 feet of snow and come out with a snack. They are solitary hunters who eat rodents, rabbits and birds, but their diet is flexible and they will also feed on fruit, vegetables, fish, frogs and even worms. A large part of the fed foxes diet is made up invertebrates like crickets, caterpillars, grasshoppers, beetles and crayfish.

Appearance
The red fox has a thick tail for it to balance but it also has other uses. The fox uses its tail as a warm blanket in the cold weather and as a signal flag to communicate with other foxes. The red fox has orangey- red fur on its back sides and head, and this is why they are called the red fox. It has white fur on its chest and under its neck.

In conclusion the red fox has a thick tail for it to balance. They are solitary hunters who eat rodents, rabbits and birds. The majority of the red fox live in forests, mountains, deserts and grasslands and there are twelve different species of foxes.

Information Report - Morepork

The Morepork
by Daniel Nuku
I am learning to inform my audience through an information report.

Have you ever heard an owl on a dark gloomy night when you're taking a bush walk? Maybe even seen two big bright yellow eyes staring at you, then a flash of brown and white. Do you know what it is? It’s the Morepork, native to New Zealand! The Morepork is a nocturnal owl  with big beady eyes that have an advanced level of site. Unlike the well known kiwi the Morepork  is not flightless, it can go up up to very high speeds.

Appearance /Huntinghttps://harpursbizarre.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/03_morepork.jpg

The Morepork has a short flat beak, black and brown type colours with a bit of white this helps it camoflash into its surroundings, also an adult Moreporks height is between  42cm-54cm  and the average weight is 175g-200g.Their super sonic eye’s have a very good vision that is used at night to track  down it’s prey. They fly at high speeds and swoop in and grab their prey. Moreporks mostly eat worms, small land mammals, small reptiles,  insects and even other birds.

Habitat
The Morepork lives in forested areas and suburbs around mountains and bushy places. The Morporks like dark places where there's no predators, tall trees and a good source of  insects and  worms. They are most commonly found in places with a generous amont of trees and shrublands. One of the key things that a Morepork needs in it’s habitat is tall trees to make nests with twigs  sticks and practically anything  they can find for example string and plastic. Also for swooping in and catching prey.

Threats
The Morepork has many threats such as stoats, possums and rats, possums are big threat to  Moreporks, one of the reasons is because possums destroy their habitat and also because they can hear the calls from the babies to their mother and find the tree where the noise is coming from and they climb the tree and take the babies. Rats and stoats are also threats to Moreporks rat are because they carry diseases, if a morepork eats it its will become sick, it’s most likely to die when eating stoats too because they carry diseases like rats.

The Morepork is a native bird to New Zealand, it is a nocturnal owl that lives deep within bush and forests across New Zealand.  Moreporks have many threats,  reduction of habitat, possums, rats and stoats which are destroying trees and killing the baby Moreporks, we can help stop the all of these threats. So next time you hear one at night remember to act fast and help our native owl the Morepork.

Information Report - Polar Bears

Polar Bears

By Leilani
I am learning to inform my audience through a information reports.

What are large, white and furry endangered animals that live in the Arctic? That’s right Polar Bears. Polar Bears are beautiful creatures that like cold climates, fatty meals and long hunting days. They also have very unusual coloured skin and fur.

Appearance:
Did you know that Polar Bears actually have black skin even though their fur appears white, their fur is actually colourless, or clear. The hair shafts are not only transparent, but are also hollow. This causes the light to reflect off his coat causing it to appear white. If this is confusing to you, think of ice and snow. Each flake is clear, but when there's a lot of it,it is white. Their coats are very dense, with an undercoat and other hairs of various lengths. Polar Bears are perfectly suited to live in the extreme temperatures of the Arctic.

Habitat:
Polar Bears are originally found in the Arctic. The most important habitats for Polar Bears are the edges of pack ice where currents and winds interact, forming a continually melting then refreezing matrix of ice patches and leads (open spaces in the ocean between sea ice). These are the areas of where Polar Bears can find the greatest number of seals. As the sea ice advances and retreats each season, individual Polar Bears may travel thousands of miles per year to find food. Polar Bears are distributed throughout the Arctic region in 19 subpopulations, including Alaska, Canada, Russia, Greenland and Norway. In the Arctic they have plenty of food to hunt for.
Diet:
Polar Bears feed almost exclusively on ringed seals and bearded seals. They are also known to eat Walrus, Beluga Whale and bowhead whale carcasses, birds’ eggs, and (rarely) vegetation. Polar Bears travel great distances in search of prey.

In Conclusion Polar Bears are not as cuddly and adorable as they look, in fact they are ferocious hunters who like fatty meals and long hunting days,so you would not want to come across one personally. They feed almost exclusively on ringed seals or  bearded seals. They are originally found in the Arctic and have 19 subpopulations.Their hair shafts are transparent and hollow, colourless or clear. Even though Polar Bears are ferocious hunters lets help them overcome the gloomy time and hope they do not become extinct.

Information Report - The Red Pandas

           The Red Pandas
By Lucy Kilkenny
24 July Friday 2015
I am learning to inform my audience through an information report.

What’s red, brown, has white on their face and has a black under belly and can be known as the fire cat? Thats right, the Red Panda. Red Pandas aren’t actually known as Pandas, they have been classified to be known as small bears. Did you know that the Red Panda’s scientific name is Ailurus fulgens but their higher classification name is Ailurus? The Red Panda communicates with squeaks, chattering noises, and chipmunk-like sounds. The average lifespan of the Red Panda is about eight to twelve years long, but Red Pandas can live longer in captivity. Red Pandas are nocturnal, which means they like to hunt and prowl around in the night.
                                              http://seveninchesofyourtime.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Yawning-Red-Panda.jpg Behaviour:
Red Panda’s behaviour is that they normally act solitary towards each other and can have a short experience of a relationship during the annual breeding season of the Red Pandas. The innate behaviours are instincts that the Red Pandas are normally born with, and one is that they have short mating relationships. Red Pandas like to imagine that they are large, vicious, carnivorous mammal hunters, even though they are Omnivores.

Diet:
Red Pandas are known as Omnivores, (Omnivores are animals that only eat plants, leaves and grass). A Red Panda’s favourite food is bamboo, but they specifically like the tender bamboo shoots. They chew the bamboo into pieces that fit into their mouths, whereas the giant pandas barely chew it at all, But when the weather is warm they also like to eat small insects and fruit, as well as berries, blossom bird eggs and small lizards too. When food is scarce they can spend up to 13 hours a day  just looking for food.

Habitat:
Red pandas don’t just live in forests, in fact they are also found in Nepal, Northern Myanmar, specifically Burma as well as in Central China, Red Pandas spend most of their lives in trees and even like to sleep aloft. Red Pandas can also be found in zoos in such as Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton, Red Pandas share part of their range with the Giant
Pandas. Red Pandas like to live in cool temperatures of bamboo forests the biggest
is habitat loss.
